How is Child support Determined in Ontario?

In Ontario all support is determined by the Child Support guidelines.

What are they?

Child support guidelines are government issued and formulas which regulate the amount of money a parent has to pay based on his or her income and the number of children involved. The guidelines are designed to reduce conflict and increase certainty in determining child support.

So, the amount of child support a parent has to pay is already predetermined?

Yeah pretty much, however, there are a few situations where there’s some discretion in the amount of support to be paid, such as, situations like those when a child is over the age of majority and the child lives approximately 50/50 with their parents, or when the support payer earns in excess of $150,000 per year.
