John Nicholson

ANNOUNCER: I’m here with John Nicholson from Cohen Highley Lawyers. What triggers investigations of healthcare professionals by their college?

JOHN: There are numerous things, but if a healthcare professional is terminated or resigns in the face of allegations of wrongdoing, their employer may be required to notify the college.

ANNOUNCER: Even if the allegations are unproven?

JOHN: Yes.

ANNOUNCER: What if the termination or resignation included termination pay or an agreement?

JOHN: The employer may still be required to inform the college.

ANNOUNCER: Why?

JOHN: It’s a safety measure designed to prevent the bad apples in the healthcare system from being moved from one position to another. But good health care professionals can also get caught up in investigations that can have serious implications for their careers.

ANNOUNCER: What can come from these investigations?

JOHN: It ranges from the college taking no action up to revocation of their license. Any health care professional who has resigned or been terminated due to allegations of misconduct should contact a lawyer experienced in this area of law immediately.
