Laura Smith
PARTNER
Laura Smith is a Partner in Cohen Highley’s Family Law Group, based in Kitchener, Ontario. Her practice is devoted exclusively to family law, with a focus on guiding individuals and families through complex and emotionally challenging transitions while striving to minimize conflict and promote constructive resolution.
Laura provides experienced legal counsel in all areas of family law, including divorce, decision-making responsibility and parenting time (formerly custody and access), child support, spousal support, and the division of property. She has appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice, the Superior Court of Justice, and various administrative tribunals, offering clients strong advocacy both in and out of the courtroom.
Certified in Collaborative Family Law, Laura is committed to assisting clients who wish to resolve their matters through cooperative, non-adversarial means. She supports a client-centered, interest-based approach that emphasizes open communication and fair outcomes tailored to each family’s unique needs.
Laura earned her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Religious Studies and History from Queen’s University in 2014, and her Juris Doctor degrees from both the University of Windsor and the University of Detroit Mercy in 2017. She is recognized for her ability to balance logical reasoning and strategic thinking with an empathetic and measured approach to client service. Her practice is rooted in resolving disputes efficiently and thoughtfully, with an emphasis on long-term stability and practical solutions.
Laura serves clients throughout Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph, Stratford and the surrounding areas who are seeking knowledgeable, compassionate, and results-oriented family law representation.
Outside of her legal practice, Laura enjoys spending time with her family—including her dog, Hali —particularly near the water or in the sunshine. Her personal interests include yoga, fitness, travel, live music, and exploring new culinary experiences. A lifelong learner, she has recently taken up piano lessons.
