Who we are:

Founded in London, Ontario in 1974, Cohen Highley LLP is a multi-disciplinary, full-service Firm dedicated to the highest standards of practice. Every member of our team operates with accessibility, innovation, and professionalism in their forefront. We pride ourselves on our commitment to the community, the legal profession, and the individuals both within and outside of our organization.

Compensation:

Culture and Benefits:

Due to the short duration of a summer student term, summer students are not entitled to benefits. However, in the likely event our summer student returns as an Articling student, the firm offers a comprehensive benefits package.

Hands on Experience:

We recognize that hands on experience is an important part of the learning process. During their employment term, students will assist and work with lawyers on files, gaining valuable experience.

Studens will have the opportunity to attend trials, appeals, examinations, motions, pre-trial conferences, preliminary hearings, and other matters. Every effort is made to accommodate a student’s special interests in particular areas of practice and to allow students to follow the progress of the files they have worked on. Ultimately, the student experience has the potential to be what you make of it. If there is something you are looking for or would like to learn – just ask!

Mentorship Program:

Each articling student is assigned to one of our lawyers for their employment term. This creates an opportunity to meet regularly to discuss progress and address questions as they arise. This person will be your go-to for advice and guidance on all situations. Though, you are not limited to just this one person. Students are very much encouraged to build their network amongst the wealth of resources within the firm.

Setting you up for Success (Training and Development):

Wondering what your first week as a summer student might look like? You will begin by spending your first week with our learning specialist, who will provide you with detailed training of our systems. Over the course of your employment term, a number of seminars will also be arranged on a variety of topics.

The Student Seminar Program is designed to give students insight into different areas of practice, as well as an overview of proceedings in these areas.  The lecture topics range from docketing and file organization to legal research and writing.

Student Responsibilities:

Summer students will assist and work with Licensees on files gaining experience in:

  • Investigation, interviewing and legal research;
  • Drafting pleadings, motion records and other proceedings;
  • Conducting examinations and cross examinations;
  • Incorporation of companies; and
  • Drafting wills and assisting in estate administration

There is no formal rotation for Summer students.
