ANNCR: I’m with Megan Alexander, a paralegal with Cohen Highley. Megan, can you explain what Small Claims Court is?
Megan: Small Claims Court offers a more accessible way to resolve civil disputes; such as, unpaid debts, services or renovations issues, and property damage claims. As of October 1, 2025 the claims limit will increase from $35,000 to $50,000, a key step in expanding access to justice in Ontario.
ANNCR: As a paralegal, what is your role within the Small Claims Court process?
Megan: Paralegals are licensed professionals under the Law Society of Ontario– who can represent and advocate for clients in Small Claims Court. While you can hire a lawyer, paralegals often offer a more cost-effective alternative.
ANNCR: So you’ll come with me to court?
Megan: Absolutely – paralegals can help resolve disputes before they reach court too. My focus is always on acheiving the best possible outcome for my clients through practical, effective advocacy.
