Bill 60 has successfully passed Third Reading in the Ontario Legislature. However, as of today, Bill 60 has not yet received Royal Assent.
What Happens After Royal Assent?
Once Bill 60 receives Royal Assent, its provisions do not all take effect immediately. The bill contains various amendments to the Residential Tenancies Act. Some changes will come into force on the day Royal Assent is granted, while others will be implemented on dates to be set by the provincial government through regulations. This staged approach allows for the necessary administrative and procedural adjustments to be made before certain provisions are enforced.
Key Points for Landlords
- Until Bill 60 receives Royal Assent and its provisions are proclaimed into force, the existing legislation and LTB procedures continue to apply. Any ongoing or new disputes will be governed by the current rules.
- Even after Royal Assent, not all changes will be immediate. The government will announce when specific provisions come into effect, particularly those requiring new administrative processes or forms.
- It is important to monitor updates from the government and the LTB regarding the implementation timeline for Bill 60.
- Landlords and property managers should review their current practices and documentation in anticipation of the upcoming changes. Once the government sets the effective dates, there may be a need to update notices and internal procedures to comply with the new requirements.
