ANNOUNCER: I’m with Victoria Young from Cohen Highley Lawyers. Who pays your ongoing bills and other finances after you die?
VICTORIA: That is the responsibility of the executor of your will. When you die, many bills, in particular those related to your house, keep coming. This includes everything from mortgage payments to property taxes, hydro bills, insurance and so on. All of these bills must be paid while your executor waits for a certificate of appointment.
ANNOUNCER: What is that?
VICTORIA: This is a document that allows your executor to distribute your assets and remaining wealth according to your will. It was formerly referred to as probate. In between the time you pass and the issuing of that certificate, it’s your executor’s responsibility to ensure your ongoing obligations are met.
ANNOUNCER: How long does it take to get a certificate of appointment?
VICTORIA: Anywhere from two to six months. And that’s after the paperwork is filed.
