What should real estate buyers and sellers be aware of when obtaining a quote from a real estate lawyer?

by Vera Dokter

ANNCR: I’m with Vera Dokter from Cohen Highley Lawyers. As a real estate lawyer, what should people remember when obtaining quotes for their residential purchase or sale?

Vera: Buyers and sellers want to ensure the price they are being quoted includes all of the charges for which they will be billed.

ANNCR: It might not include everything?

Vera: Often, a quote will just cover “legal fees”, when other elements of the transaction will add to your bill. Title insurance, government registration fees, title search costs, HST – just to name a few – it’s important that you understand the full cost when comparing your quotes between firms, not just the fee component.

ANNCR: So it’s not the same process every time?

Vera: Not necessarily – because every sale and purchase transaction is unique, it’s important to retain a real estate lawyer who can walk you through everything and explain why each charge is necessary.

ANNCR: Thank you, Vera. This has been your Cohen Highley Legal Minute.
